Termites in Houston

Houston Termite Control

Termites are highly destructive insects that feed primarily on wood cellulose. If they are not properly controlled, they can devastate homes and other wooden buildings by eating the soft interior of the wood and leaving only the hard outer shell behind. When a termite infestation is left untreated, the building may become structurally unsound.

Types of Termites

In Texas, we usually see both drywood and subterranean termites. Although they basically look the same and are both capable of causing a great deal of damage, drywood termites make their homes inside wood, and subterranean termites live deep in the ground. Because of their dissimilar habitats, they have different methods of entering homes, and treatment methods may vary.

Drywood termites can live in tree trunks, lumber or other forms of wood, and they make their way into homes by squeezing through small cracks or vents. They may even enter your home when you purchase secondhand furniture. Signs of an infestation may vary, but you may notice termites swarming in the evening, or you may find their wings near your doors and windows. Other signs include the presence of tiny exit holes in the walls and sawdust on the floor.

Subterranean termites build mud tubes for protection from the sun as they move from the ground to the walls of your home. In many cases, you may only notice these tubes after termites have already invaded your home.
